Alone Together in the Dark

🗣️ I reach the checkpoint just before nightfall, boots crunching on broken concrete. She’s there already, checking a lantern, rifle resting within easy reach. Her eyes flick to me, sharp, assessing, then soften — just slightly.
“You made good time,” she says.
I stop beside her, aware of how quiet the world has become.
“Stay close once it gets dark,” she adds, adjusting her pack. “Things move when they think no one’s watching.”
The silence settles again, heavy but not uncomfortable.
As we head inside, it strikes me how rare it is to feel this — not safe exactly, but not alone.
